The historic “Kuchel Eck” at Ludwigkirchplatz in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf will continue to operate under new management. Berlin restaurateur Josef Laggner is taking over the insolvent establishment, securing the future of a corner pub that has been part of the neighborhood for over a century. The name will be retained while the concept undergoes revision.
Josef Laggner Takes Over Berlin’s Traditional “Kuchel Eck”
Takeover After Insolvency
“Kuchel Eck,” which had previously filed for insolvency, will now be operated by the Laggner Group. This ensures the location at Ludwigkirchplatz remains a gastronomic venue. Josef Laggner, who has been active in Berlin’s hospitality industry for decades, commented: “For over 100 years, ‘Kuchel Eck’ has brought people together at this location – over a good beer, small dishes, and above all, good conversation. Hardly any other place in the neighborhood represents living Berlin corner pub culture as much as this one. Precisely for this reason, we cannot and will not stand by and watch such places disappear.”
Planned Modifications
According to Laggner, the fundamental character of the pub will be preserved while receiving what he describes as “a clearer direction.” The future offering will include hot and cold dishes, beer from Berlin and Bavaria, and what the operator calls “honest, cordial hospitality.” Following a brief renovation period, the establishment is scheduled to reopen.
The Laggner Group: Portfolio and Challenges
The Laggner Group, led by Josef “Joe” Laggner, operates numerous gastronomic concepts throughout Germany. The company was founded in 1997 with the acquisition of Lutter & Wegner at Gendarmenmarkt, which is currently celebrating its 215th anniversary. The portfolio includes:
- Lutter & Wegner (Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin; additional locations in Leipzig and Heringsdorf on Usedom)
- Fischerhütte at Schlachtensee (Berlin)
- Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt and Augustiner auf Bötzow (Berlin)
- Newton Bar (Berlin)
- Krongut Bornstedt and Kaiserliche Matrosenstation Kongsnaes (Potsdam)
- Establishments in KaDeWe (tavern, wine shop, and wine bar)
- Locations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport and in Potsdam, Leipzig, and Heringsdorf
The group currently employs approximately 450 people.
Despite its extensive portfolio, the company has also faced operational challenges in recent years. Individual locations have undergone strategic repositioning, reflecting broader market pressures affecting the German hospitality industry, including increased operating costs and changing consumer behavior. These experiences have informed the group’s approach to integrating new acquisitions.
Background: A Neighborhood Institution
“Kuchel Eck” has operated at Ludwigkirchplatz for over a century. Prior to its recent insolvency, the establishment was known as a neighborhood gathering place with regular clientele. The upcoming renovation phase aims to prepare the premises for continued operation while maintaining its function as a local meeting point.
