Assaf Granit is back in Berlin
The Berta Restaurant in Berlin has officially reopened at its location on Stresemannstraße 99. The restaurant is now under the culinary direction of Chef Assaf Granit, co-founder of the international JLM Group, which operates over 20 restaurants worldwide, including the renowned Machneyuda in Jerusalem. The reopening marks the latest addition to Berlin’s evolving dining landscape, introducing a menu that blends Israeli culinary traditions with German and Eastern European influences.
Culinary Concept and Menu
The restaurant’s menu is structured around what the team describes as an “Israeli homage to German dishes.” It integrates flavours and techniques from Jerusalem with local German ingredients, resulting in a fusion of shared culinary heritage. The kitchen is led by Chef Granit, whose approach is rooted in the cooking of his grandmother, Berta, after whom the restaurant is named. Granit explains Gourmet Report:
“The idea behind Berta is deeply personal. It’s about bringing the flavours of my family’s history in Jerusalem to the city where my grandmother was born. We’re not recreating the past—we’re interpreting it through contemporary techniques and local produce.”
The à la carte menu includes several signature dishes
Polenta Machneyuda: with mushrooms, green asparagus, Parmesan, truffle oil, and a ragout of German sausage.
Leas Chicken Livers: served with caramelised onions, silan (date syrup), a 6-minute egg, mustard, and challah.
Fattoush: with pickled tomatoes, cucumber, labneh, croutons, feta, za’atar, olives, and a vodka-based dressing.
Schnitzel and Gretel: chicken schnitzel with herb salad, raspberry ketchup, and ras el hanout mustard.
99 Balloons: Josper-grilled sea bass with Brussels sprouts, sabzi, harissa hollandaise, and dukkah.
Beverage Programme
The bar programme, developed in collaboration with in-house sommelier Natasha Katz, features a selection of wines and a range of signature cocktails. These drinks incorporate ingredients such as cardamom syrup, roasted beetroot, and Turkish coffee, aiming to bridge Berlin’s cocktail culture with Middle Eastern flavours. Notable cocktails include:
Berta operates as a combined restaurant and bar, with music provided by resident DJs several evenings per week. The space is designed to function as what the management calls a “place of celebration,” integrating dining, drinks, and music into a single experience. The reopening was timed to coincide with the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), with the aim of positioning Berta as a cultural and social hub.
Broader Context
The JLM Group, founded by Assaf Granit, Uri Navon, and Tomer Lanzman, is known for developing restaurant concepts that emphasise narrative and experiential dining. The group currently operates venues in Israel, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Saint Barthélemy, with further openings planned in Paris and London in 2026.
The reopening of Berta represents part of a wider trend in Berlin’s hospitality sector, where established international chefs are launching venues that blend global culinary traditions with local flavours.
